An education provider can apply for a licence in two categories: Student (to sponsor individuals aged 16 or over who come to the UK for their post-16 education) and Child Student (for students aged 4-17 who come to the UK to study at independent schools)

Licensed student sponsor (approved educational provider) is responsible for issuing  a reference number (called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)) once they have offered a student Unconditional offer of a place to on the course.

Student sponsor has to pass the Basic Compliance Assessment every 12 months in order to retain a Student Sponsor status, and and to be listed on the Register of Student Sponsors. 

Student sponsors are expected to play a part in ensuring that the system is not abused. They are required to fulfil certain duties and ensure that immigration control is maintained in order to gain and retain a Student sponsor licence.

This visa route is designed for a person aged 16 and over who wants to study an English language course in the UK for between 6 and 11 months at an accredited institution. If your English language course is less than 6 months, then you should apply for a Standard Visitor visa.
